Update on Emergency Contraception

Learning Objectives
- Describe emergency contraceptive (EC) products, including progestin-only EC pills (ECPs), regimens, and ease of access, to ensure more consistent usage by patients
- Outline and discuss ECPs’ mechanism of action with patients in order to dispel myths surrounding ECPs
- Respond to patients’ concerns about the safety and efficacy of ECPs, according to FDA guidelines
- Provide evidence-based EC information and appropriate counseling and care to patients to insure improved patient health care outcomes
Accreditation Information
Physicians: The Association of Reproductive Health Professionals is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. ARHP designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurse Practitioners and Nurses: This educational activity has been approved by the Continuing Education Approval Program of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health for up to 1.0 contact hours, including up to 0.5 pharmacology hour. Credit can be applied toward the nursing continuing requirements of most professional organizations and State Boards of Nursing.
Pharmacists: The Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 1.0 contact hour of continuing education credit.
