Trump Administration’s New Expanded Global Gag Rule Will Have Deadly Consequences

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration’s expanded Global Gag Rule policy, announced on Monday, is an unacceptable overreach by anti-abortion extremists with an ideological agenda.

“The bottom line is that people will die because of this policy,” said Wayne Shields, ARHP’s president and CEO. “This represents a new low from an unacceptably ideological administration known for its anti-science and anti-health care positions.”

For the first time, the Global Gag Rule applies to grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts. Without this funding, many health organizations around the world will not be able to provide HIV prevention, care and treatment services, provide integrated maternal health care with contraceptive services, or counsel women on their potential risks of Zika infection.

ARHP trains, supports, and advocates for the sexual and reproductive health professionals who impact patients’ lives. Our mission is to transform and improve SRH care and access through professional training and advocacy. We translate high-quality science into practice and policy through accredited, peer-reviewed programs and policy efforts, and we bring together professionals across disciplines and specialties for evidence-based training and network building.
