ARHP Applauds Supreme Court's Decision To Strike Down Harmful Abortion Clinic Restrictions

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the US Supreme Court overruled severe abortion clinic restrictions that had been imposed by the state of Texas. Wayne C. Shields, president and CEO of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP), issued the following statement:

“ARHP applauds today’s US Supreme Court’s ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which reaffirms a woman’s constitutional right and ability—no matter where she lives—to make her own decisions about her health, family, and future. This decision strikes down Texas measure HB2, a law that imposed detrimental restrictions on abortion providers and women seeking abortions in the state. This action allows the few remaining clinics in Texas to keep their doors open, and paves the way for other clinics to open or reopen to meet the needs of women in the many underserved areas of the state. The tide has turned on the current abortion access crisis in Texas, and this decision sends a signal to other states who impose similar, unwarranted restrictions on abortion care.

“ARHP fully supports every woman’s fundamental right to make her own decisions about sexual and reproductive health care. Political barriers that create disparities of access to essential health care—including abortion care—represent a public health failure. ARHP remains steadfast in our support of Whole Women’s Health and all abortion providers in the state of Texas.”
