ARHP has launched a visiting faculty program, New Developments in Contraception: The Single-Rod Implant, to raise awareness about this valuable contraceptive. The goal of this program is to increase the understanding of the single-rod implant as a method of contraception by U.S. clinicians.

Background
The high unintended pregnancy rate, high rates of misuse and discontinuation of contraceptive methods, patient interest in alternate contraceptive methods, and sterilization regret point to the need for more safe and available contraceptive methods to be available in the US. A single-rod implant was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration and providers in women’s health need to know the special features of this new contraceptive, the truth behind common provider and patient myths, as well as the pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, and efficacy of implants.
Program Design and Educational Activities
The New Developments in Contraception: The Single-Rod Implant program includes many carefully developed components to meet health care providers’ and patients’ needs for education. All program components have been established based on the most current research and evidence in the field and the expertise of the Expert Medical Advisory Committee.
Curriculum Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of these sessions, participants will be able to:
- List three advantages of the contraceptive implant
- List three selection criteria for appropriate candidates for the contraceptive implant
- Identify two possible side effects of the contraceptive implant
- Discuss the clinical expectations and management of bleeding with this method
- Describe the steps for insertion and removal of the contraceptive implant
Intended Audience and Accreditation
The intended audiences for this program are physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care providers in obstetrics/gynecology, and family medicine.
The curriculum/live sessions and Clinical Proceedings associated with this program are accredited for continuing medical education, nursing contact hours, pharmacology, and pharmacist credits.
