ARHP Statement on Nomination of Tom Price for Secretary of HHS

WASHINGTON – Justine Wu, MD, board chair of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, issues the following statement in response to the nomination of Tom Price for Secretary of HHS:

"ARHP has grave concerns about Tom Price’s nomination for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. His nomination threatens core American values of equitable access to health care for everyone, support for human rights, and respect for individual autonomy. In addition to mounting ethical considerations, Dr. Price is disconnected from the real lives and struggles of Americans, especially people from marginalized communities who have the least access to health care and insurance.

As a Georgia Representative, Dr. Price voted over 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Despite his unrelenting opposition to the ACA, he has failed to propose a viable alternative health care policy that will provide Americans with affordable and equitable health care. He supports removal of popular components of the ACA, such as ensuring those with pre-existing conditions can still access care and removal of lifetime caps on insurance benefits. Even as data demonstrate a clear and causal relationship between increased access to contraception and better outcomes for women and children, Dr. Price promises to reintroduce cost barriers for contraception. Eliminating these critical provisions means abandoning millions of Americans who gained essential health insurance coverage through Obamacare.

The 14,000 members of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals are most concerned about his long opposition to necessary sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception, family planning, and abortion care. He has consistently opposed appropriating funds to support family planning care through the Title X system and aggressively advocates for defunding Planned Parenthood. For all of these reasons, ARHP urges opposition to Dr. Price’s nomination. He appeared before the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday, January 24, 2017."
