Explaining Contraceptive Risk to Patients



Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least one factor that influences patients’ perceptions of risk.
  • List three different means of presenting risk; describe the advantages of each.
  • Identify at least three patient characteristics to consider when counseling about risks and benefits.
  • Describe at least one patient education tool that can be used to effectively communicate the risks and benefits of hormonal contraceptives.

Accreditation Information

Physicians: The Association of Reproductive Health Professionals is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. ARHP designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurse Practitioners and Nurses: This educational activity has been approved by the Continuing Education Approval Program of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health for 1.0 contact hours, including 0.75 pharmacology hours. Credit can be applied toward the nursing continuing requirements of most professional organizations and State Boards of Nursing.
