Dr. Handsfield is Professor Emeritus of Medicine, University of Washington Center for AIDS and STD, Seattle, Washington. He received his medical degree from Columbia University and served his residency training in internal medicine and his fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Washington. For twenty-five years Dr. Handsfield directed the Public Health—Seattle & King County STD Control Program, Seattle, Washington. During his 35 year career in research, clinical services and education on sexually transmitted infections, he has authored or co-authored over 220 research papers, monographs, reviews, chapters, and a book, Color Atlas and Synopsis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, now in its third edition. Dr. Handsfield’s research has emphasized the translation of research in STD/HIV prevention strategies to programmatic implementation and he consults frequently on STI/HIV prevention with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including development of CDC’s quadrennial STD treatment guidelines. Dr. Handsfield was the 2010 recipient of the American STD Association’s Thomas Parran Award, the highest national recognition of lifetime career achievement in STI research and prevention.
