On Friday, September 9th, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP) will present the Preserving Core Values in Science Award to Susan Wood, PhD for her outstanding dedication to science and to advancing women’s health. Last week, Wood resigned her positions as Assistant Commissioner for Women’s Health and Director of the FDA Office of Women's Health after the FDA ignored the science—and the consensus of its own expert advisory panel—and issued yet another delay on over-the-counter status for Plan B®, emergency contraception (EC).
"I can no longer serve as staff when scientific and clinical evidence, fully evaluated and recommended for approval by the professional staff here, has been overruled," Wood wrote in a letter to her colleagues and women’s health advocates. "The recent decision announced by the Commissioner about emergency contraception, which continues to limit women's access to a product that would reduce unintended pregnancies and reduce abortions, is contrary to my core commitment to improving and advancing women's health."
“Throughout her career, Susan Wood has been a champion for women’s health. By refusing to cave into the ideological and political pressures to deny EC to women, she’s once again taking a stand for women,” said Wayne C. Shields, ARHP president and CEO.
The Preserving Core Values in Science Award will be presented at Reproductive Health 2005, ARHP’s annual clinical meeting. For more information about this award please contact Ann McCall at communications@arhp.org or (202) 466-3825.
