Senior Science Policy Analyst

Description of Organization:
The mission of the AACR is to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication, and collaboration. Through its programs and services, the AACR fosters research in cancer and related biomedical science; accelerates the dissemination of new research findings among scientists and others dedicated to the conquest of cancer; promotes science education and training; and advances the understanding of cancer etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment throughout the world.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the development and successful execution of activities in support of AACR’s national public and science policy priorities.
  • Support committee and task force activities, including coordinating meeting logistics, preparing background materials, and drafting invitations and other correspondence.
  • Perform literature reviews and associated data collection and analysis for issue briefs, reports, and other documents.
  • Prepare support material for Congressional visits, briefings, and advocacy efforts.
  • Contribute to the AACR policy newsletter to inform AACR members, cancer organizations, targeted individuals, and other groups of relevant policy news.
  • Monitor and report on congressional and agency activities relevant to priority issues.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of special sessions and briefings to educate Members of Congress and their staffs about important pending legislation and issues affecting cancer research.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of efforts to educate AACR member scientists and/or the public about important policy issues affecting cancer research.
  • Attend and report on relevant local scientific meetings, policy meetings, briefings and congressional hearings.
  • Performs the essential functions of the position and other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, health or policy required; graduate degree in health-or science- related field preferred.
  • Three to five years of relevant policy experience.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of judgment, discretion, tact, and insight.
  • A self-starter with creativity, initiative, and demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to productively and effectively function while unsupervised, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task, follow through on projects, and work under rapidly developing deadlines and priorities.
  • Strong interest in cancer and cancer-related biomedical research.
  • Knowledge of government policies and procedures and the political process a plus.
  • Facility with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
