Description of Organization:
The Black Women's Health Imperative (Imperative) is the only organization devoted solely to advancing the health and wellness of America's 19.5 million Black women and girls through advocacy, community health and wellness education and leadership development. Founded as the National Black Women's Health Project in 1983 by health activist and McArthur genius Byllye Y. Avery, the Imperative promotes optimal health for African American women across their lifespan - physically, mentally and spiritually.

Position Responsibilities:

Black women’s Health Imperative (Imperative) seeks a Senior Policy Associate who will help lead in the development of a national and state policy agenda that builds upon the Imperative’s 29-year commitment to sexual and reproductive justice.

Position Overview
The successful candidate will assist in institutionalizing a policy agenda that focuses on protecting access to safe and affordable abortion, contraceptives and other reproductive health and justice rights for Black women and other women of color. She must be a self-starter, have the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment of a small non-profit organization, and understand the importance of building a strong alliance with other reproductive health and social justice allies, partner organizations and policymakers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the development of national and state policy strategies and mobilization activities with Imperative constituents and national and community-based women’s and minority organizations
  • Help build a strong network of young Black women advocates to support a national movement for addressing breast cancer and reproductive and gender justice for Black women
  • Track all relevant women’s health and health disparity issues and activities on Capitol Hill, in states and among constituent groups
  • Coordinate the development and writing of online and written fact sheets, talking points, position statements, staff memos,  e-news, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents on key priority women’s health issues, including abortion and contraceptive access, breast and cervical cancer, HIV/AIDS and STIs, and maternal and infant health
  • Develop constituency action kits and alerts and legislative updates on priority issues
  • Plan policy briefings for congressional staff and members of Congress through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls
  • Represent the Imperative at coalition and congressional meetings, public events and policy briefings
  • Establish contacts with constituents and potential allies in key states
  • Help raise the profile of the Imperative and the needs of Black Women in various sectors that promote social justice and human rights issues


Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree with a minimum of five years related work non-profit experience
  • Policy and/or advocacy experience
  • Strong written and oral communication and research skills
  • Strong organizational skills, ability independently and collegially as part of a team with junior and senior colleagues
  • Knowledge of reproductive health and health disparities issues
  • Ability to work weekends and travel as required and if necessary
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Imperative’s mission and goals to protect women’s health
