Description of Organization:

The Cancer Support Community (CSC), the largest nonprofit provider of social and emotional support for people affected by cancer, is seeking a Senior Director to lead its Cancer Policy Institute (CPI), scheduled to launch in the Spring of 2013. This newly created role is based in Washington, DC and is a part of the exciting growth at CSC. Grounded in the mission to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community, the work of the Cancer Policy Institute is to ensure that all people affected by cancer have access to quality, evidence-based care that includes both medical and psychosocial care throughout the cancer continuum.

Reflecting a bold new vision in cancer advocacy, the Cancer Policy Institute at the Cancer Support Community will listen closely to the voices of millions of patients and families across the nation, including those served face to face at our 50+ brick and mortar centers, as well as those served through our hospital partnerships, online and by phone. The learning acquired through our 30+ years of direct patient service, coupled with the knowledge gained at our Research and Training Institute will foster the translation of knowledge about the true cancer experience to policymakers and legislators on Capitol Hill, at the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, among others.



Position Responsibilities:
  • Work with EVP, External Affairs on overall strategy of the Institute
  • Create vision of Federal and State level regulatory and legislative agenda(s) for CSC
  • Work with EVP and policy committee to determine CSC action on current events (e.g. sign-on letters, consortium, etc.)
  • Secure short and long-term funding for the Institute
  • Assist in the development and implementation of CSCs public policy education agenda
  • Conduct strategic policy analysis, research issues and draft reports (both informational and instructional) for internal and external distribution
  • Act as the primary author of memos, briefs, letters and other documents from the Public Policy group
  • Support and identify opportunities for innovative partnerships with the public and private sector, academia and government agencies to advance CSC projects and services
  • Engage and coordinates with CSC’s national partners to identify areas of common work and consensus, and to advocate collectively for positive change for people affected by cancer
  • Effectively disseminate methodology and results of successful CSC projects and services with the goal of influencing state and national policy and practices
  • Support the coordination of state-based strategies
  • Assist in representing CSC Public Policy department by interfacing with policymakers, fellow advocates and media outlets
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual report
  • Lead activities around affiliate training, Hill Briefings, quarterly educational workshops and other offerings
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • 5-10 years of experience in public policy, public interest law or related field, as exhibited by extensive experience in working with state and federal policymakers, national partners, advocacy groups, and constituents
  • 5-10 years of experience working with multiple and diverse partners, including but not limited to policymakers and their staff, service providers, business leaders, advocates, community organizers, field experts, and the media
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead coalitions
  • Ability to analyze policy, develop recommendations and create position statements
  • Ability to write clearly, persuasively, and briefly according to intended audiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the policy and programmatic issues related to comprehensive cancer care that includes psychosocial support and education
  • Demonstrated leadership, acute analytical skills, strong public speaking, confidence in communicating with a variety of public figures and dignitaries, as well as success in fostering strategic partnerships
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with any specific software or technology needed for the job Highly self-motivated and directed, with attention to detail
  • Flexible team player who thrives in environments requiring ability to effectively prioritize and juggle multiple concurrent projects
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift and reach for light objects; close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, text and figures; ability to type utilizing a computer keyboard; ability to travel to outside locations; and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time as a primary job function
  • This is a regular full-time position that could require travel up to 20% of the time
