Description of Organization: Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health is a physician-led, national, not-for-profit organization that exists to ensure that all people have the knowledge, access to quality services, and freedom to make their own reproductive health decisions. We implement effective programs for our physician members in public policy, community organizing, communications, and medical education at the systems, organizational, and individual levels. Headquartered in New York, PRCH is the voice of pro-choice physicians.
Position Responsibilities: The Public Policy Manager works with the Director of Government Relations to lead PRCH’s Washington and state level legislative and regulatory activities. The Public Policy Manager works with the Director of Government Relations to develop the strategy for, and oversee the implementation of, all local, state, and national public policy activities, with a focus on issue-specific physician organizing. The position is based in Washington, DC.
Reports to: Director of Government Relations
Position Duties Include:
Public Policy
- Supports Director of Government Relations in developing and implementing strategies for PRCH physicians and staff to effect change in Washington and selected states on reproductive health policies
- Works with Director of Government Relations and other PRCH staff to formulate and promote PRCH legislative and administrative policies and initiatives
- Coordinates with Director of Government Relations in planning and implementation of PRCH lobby days
- Works closely with the Director of Leadership Development to identify advocacy opportunities for physicians in PRCH’s network
- Monitors the introduction and movement of key state and federal legislation and regulations that may impact reproductive health policies
- Develops advocacy tools that support PRCH’s legislative and administrative advocacy work, such as talking points, backgrounders, leave behinds, and coalition letters
- Collaborates with Communications Department and Education, Research and Training Department to keep PRCH position statements current
Networking
- Represents PRCH at conferences, meetings with allied reproductive health and rights organizations and meetings with elected officials when appropriate
- Increase contact, and create and build relationships, with key policy offices
- Supports Director of Government Relations by recruitment and mobilization of an advocacy network of PRCH supporters and activists
- Collaborates with Director of Training Networks and the Director of Leadership Development to incorporate advocacy efforts in the Leadership Training Academy
Online Advocacy
- Works with PRCH staff to develop online campaigns that support our advocacy goals
- Works with Communications team to maintain the content on PRCH facebook and twitter accounts
- Supports the maintenance of content for the PRCH.org home page
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s required; an advanced degree preferred (MPH, MPP, JD, etc)
- At least 5 years’ work experience in advocacy, public policy, grassroots organizing, government, law, and/or program development with increasing responsibilities
- Broad knowledge of reproductive health and rights and/or health issues and current legislative and policy consequences
- Experience in managing and participating in coalitions
- Strong commitment to expanding access to reproductive healthcare
- Ability to supervise and manage staff, interns, and volunteers when needed
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks
- Excellent organizational, public speaking, writing, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with departmental and cross-departmental teams
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of personalities
- Ability to work with physicians and other medical professionals
