Description of Organization:
The Virginia Coalition to Protect Women's Health supports affordable access to comprehensive, reproductive healthcare for women seeking medical services in Virginia regardless of age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomics or geographic location.

Position Responsibilities:

The Coalition to Protect Women's Health is looking for a highly motivated, responsible, outgoing and creative Public Health Advocate/Educator (PHA) with a minimum three years of policy, advocacy and/or organizing experience to manage a short-term public policy initiative regarding the promulgation of Virginia regulations. The PHA will work closely with the Coalition's members and grassroots organizers to recruit and activate a network of supportive health professionals. Candidates must be supportive of the Coalition's goals as well as the respective missions of its member organizations.

Recruit, educate and train medical/health professionals to participate in a intensive, time-sensitive public policy process regarding women's access to reproductive healthcare.

  • Develop relationships with community health leaders, and establish and coordinate a council of medical/health professionals.
  • Conduct empirical research concerning reproductive health issues.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Virginia's administrative regulatory process.
  • Present (both orally and in writing) medical statistics, established evidence, current research and case law regarding access to reproductive healthcare.
  • Compile research on access to healthcare, patient care and safety issues as compared to other states.
  • Execute a comprehensive strategy to meet the goals and objectives of the Coalition. Assess progress and develop and implement new strategies as necessary.
  • Prepare periodic progress and tracking reports for the Coalition leadership and for community supporters.
  • Prepare and present public testimony.
  • Identify relevant media outlets, develop effective messaging strategies and serve as a Coalition spokesperson before the media and general public.
  • Design educational materials as deemed necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:
  • Supportive of the mission, vision and work of the Virginia Coalition to Protect Women's Health and that of its respective partner organizations.
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Energetic, outgoing, self-motivated and optimistic.
  • Able to work well with diverse groups/individuals and independently.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and work under pressing time constraints.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Concentration in health, science and/or medicine preferred. Graduate degree/work a plus.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Knowledge of reproductive rights issues and community organizing strategies preferred.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Excel and word-processing software.
  • Ability to travel with valid driver's license, car and proof of car insurance.
