Description of Organization:
NAF is a 501(c) (3) organization, dedicated to ensuring safe, legal, and accessible abortion care, which promotes health and justice for women. NAF members include private and non-profit clinics, Planned Parenthood affiliates, women’s health centers, physician’s offices, and hospitals who together care for more than half the women who choose abortion in the U.S. and Canada each year. Our members also include public hospitals and both public and private clinics in Mexico City. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and their patients. NAF’s programs include: accredited continuing medical education; quality assurance and improvement; clinic security and law enforcement education; clinical, legal, and consumer publications; public education; public policy advocacy; and group purchasing. NAF also has two affiliated organizations: the NAF Hotline Fund (HLF), which runs a national toll-free hotline; and National Abortion Federation Canada.

Position Responsibilities:
The Vice President and General Counsel will work closely with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, and staff to provide general legal advice on all aspects of NAF, HLF and NAF Canada operations, programs, and services. This includes contracting; leasing; employment policies and benefits; publications and copyright issues; insurance law; board and non-profit governance issues; certification and accreditation law; general non-profit organization law; confidentiality policies; civil discovery matters; health care law; and abortion and reproductive rights law. The Vice President and General Counsel will also monitor and oversee any litigation that may affect the organizations, including working with outside counsel and members. The Vice President and General Counsel will provide to the President and CEO, Board of Directors, staff and members legal advice on legislative and regulatory issues affecting the non-profit status of the organizations. The Vice President and General Counsel will also assist in the management of NAF and assume responsibility, with NAF’s other Vice President, in the absence of the President and CEO.The Vice President and General Counsel will also be responsible for direct programmatic supervision of several NAF departments, including public policy advocacy and clinic security. The Vice President and General Counsel will further provide legal counsel to NAF’s related organizations, including National Abortion Federation Canada and the NAF Hotline Fund.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have at least ten years of legal experience and expertise in the above areas, as well as managerial and supervisory experience. Candidates should also have a demonstrated commitment to reproductive rights, and excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to explain legal issues and implications to non-legal audiences. Candidates should be able to work cooperatively with NAF members, Board of Directors, and staff on all levels, and with members or staff of other organizations. Candidates must be based in Washington, DC and must be eligible for admission to the DC bar.
