President and CEO

Date Posted: 10/24/2012
Organization: Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM)
Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Description of Organization:
Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) seeks a dynamic president to lead the preeminent reproductive health care organization in the state. For more than 80 years, PPLM has worked to protect the reproductive health of Massachusetts residents and promote freedom of choice. Today, PPLM operates seven health centers serving nearly 50,000 clients, leads pioneering education and research programs, and pursues high-impact advocacy to advance its mission.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Building upon planning work already underway, set and implement a strategic vision and plan for PPLM over the next 5+ years, with precise long- and short-term goals and priorities. Ensure that this vision is sufficiently flexible to respond to an evolving environment but sufficiently clear to guide and inspire staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • Communicate the vision widely. Serve as an impassioned, eloquent spokesperson and leader for PPLM and for sexual health and reproductive rights to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Capitalize creatively upon opportunities presented by the Affordable Care Act and Massachusetts health care reform to build strategic partnerships with payers, providers, and governmental entities.  Demonstrate the value, in quality and cost, of PPLM services.
  • Ensure a sustainable, stable organization with an achievable business model, highly efficient operations, and increased volume and market share. Drive strong financial performance and outstanding risk and quality management. Strengthen PPLM’s marketing capacity and expertise.
  •  Lead fundraising through a strong and well supported development department, through volunteer engagement, and through extensive personal efforts.
  • Ensure that PPLM’s public advocacy remains aggressive and effective.  Identify, inform, and promote state legislative leaders committed to advancing the PPLM mission. Build and reinforce strong partnerships with other policy advocates.
  • Ensure that diverse communities are comfortable interacting with PPLM and accessing its programs and services.  Continue to defend and increase access and reduce disparities in care.
  • Support PPLM’s educational programs and explore ways in which they might be brought to scale and produce revenues.
  • Propel and support PPLM’s Research Center as a leading national resource for professional training and high quality sexual and reproductive health research.
  •  Enhance significantly PPLM’s use of technology and social media.
  • Develop, inspire, and retain a high quality, enthusiastic, stable, and diverse work force. Foster cohesion, collaboration, and unity of purpose throughout the organization.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an optimistic, enterprising, versatile leader who can embody the integrity and high standards that have characterized PPLM for more than 80 years.  She or he must be passionately committed to the mission and willing and able to defend it under trying circumstances. The president must be capable of directing, motivating, and developing staff and promoting an internal culture of teamwork while powerfully representing the organization externally.  All candidates must enjoy the challenge of leading in an uncertain and rapidly changing environment, where flexibility, creativity, and nimbleness are essential.

The preferred professional experience and personal characteristics for this position are as follows:

  • Demonstrated passion and commitment for the PPLM mission.
  • At least ten to fifteen years of innovative leadership in a service-driven institution. A record of inspirational staff leadership and team building coupled with effective delegation.  Business and marketing savvy and financial acumen.
  • Sophisticated understanding of health care delivery, payment, and the complexities of health care reform. Experience in health care in Massachusetts would be an advantage and experience having worked in a clinical environment would also be valuable.
  •  Public presence. Very strong communications skills and the experience and inclination to be an effective, outgoing spokesperson for PPLM.
  •  Excellent advocacy skills. Tenacity, grace, and resilience in the face of political pressure, media scrutiny, and bureaucratic resistance. Skills in negotiation and the ability to deal comfortably with confrontation and controversy. The more understanding of political and legislative processes and players the better.
  •  Fundraising skill and appetite.  Ideally, direct experience raising significant major gifts. Willingness to be very actively involved in development, including in donor solicitation.
  •  An accessible and open management style that motivates staff, provides them with a clear and consistent sense of direction and accountability, and reinforces teamwork.
  •  Facility with new and emerging technologies and their use in operations as well as communication and social media.
  • The highest level of personal and professional integrity.
  •  Exceptional energy, stamina, and resilience.  A sense of humor and fun.
