Description of Organization:
The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers in North America. NAF is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and patients. NAF members include clinics, hospitals, and physicians’ offices who together care for more than half the women who choose abortion in the U.S. and Canada each year. Our members also include public hospitals and both public and private clinics in Mexico City.

Position Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Medical Director is to provide medical leadership for NAF programs. This includes: overseeing quality assurance activities, including reviewing and revising NAF Clinical Policy Guidelines (CPGs); developing clinical practice bulletins; managing and conducting site visits; ensuring members’ compliance with the CPGs; supervising clinical staff; and providing technical assistance to members. The Medical Director will be responsible for developing and conducting education and training programs; developing clinical education resources; conducting research; advocating on legislative and regulatory issues on a federal, state and provincial level; and serving as a medical spokesperson for the organization. The Medical Director will work collaboratively with NAF staff and members to further the mission of the organization and our work in Latin America. The Medical Director will also serve as the liaison to two Board medical committees; will report to the President and CEO; and is part of the senior management team at NAF.

Duties:

  • Administers NAF’s Clinical Services and Quality Assurance programs;
  • Ensures that NAF members are in compliance with NAF’s Clinical Policy Guidelines;
  • Schedules and oversees a minimum number of quality site visits annually;
  • Personally conducts quality site inspections of member facilities, including members in Latin America;
  • Ensures consistency in site visit assessment and follow-up, and provides for training and evaluation as required by site visit;
  • Provides technical assistance and training for members;
  • Conducts research;
  • Works with the Board’s Clinical Policies Committee to ensure timely review of current literature to update NAF’s Clinical Policy Guidelines annually and issue Clinical Policy Bulletins as necessary;
  • Works closely with the Board’s QAI Committee to further the work of the QAI program;
  • Works closely with the Training & Education Department to develop and teach conference sessions, webinars, and provide regional training;
  • Develops educational materials;
  • Works closely with the public policy team to prepare and deliver testimony on federal, state, and provincial issues;
  • Serves as a medical spokesperson for the organization;
  • Advises the President and CEO and Board of Directors regarding clinical matters;
  • Supervises Clinicians, QAI Assistant, and Hotline Clinical Data Manager;
  • Ensures timely review and update of all clinical materials provided to members; and
  • Provides support as needed to all departments of NAF for any clinical issues and related concerns impacting membership.


Qualifications:
  • Board Certified MD or DO from an accredited medical school;
  • Experience practicing abortion care;
  • Strong research and administrative skills;
  • Knowledge of health care quality practices;
  • Fluent in Spanish;
  • Strong commitment to a woman’s right to choose abortion;
  • Ability to travel 30% time; and
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communications skills.
