Medical Director

Description of Organization: PPNFL is a relatively new affiliate that was created when Planned Parenthood of North Central Florida and Northeast Florida merged in 2009. Our mission is to provide reproductive and complementary healthcare, education, and advocacy to our communities. We are headquartered in Jacksonville and serve twenty-five counties in North Florida. We currently provide care at four health centers in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Gainesville, and Tallahassee. In partnership with our new medical director, we are eager to grow our presence in underserved segments of our service area.
Position Responsibilities:
- Administers the affiliate’s medical program to ensure that the me*dical policies and clinical standards established by PPFA’s National Medical Committee and the affiliate’s Quality Management Team are implemented and maintained
- Provides direct medical care including family planning, IUD insertion, Norplant removal, colposcopy, cryotherapy, LEEP, abortion services, complication management, and other reproductive health services
- Serves as Physician Director of abortion, colposcopy, and LEEP programs and other reproductive health services
- Actively participates on the Quality Management Team and committees including overseeing internal compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, OSHA compliance, and research standards
- Proposes and supports appropriate changes to national standards
- Functions as the Director of Laboratory Services per CLIA regulations
- Is available to provide assistance with rescues and complication management for medical staff when needed
- Reviews and approves credentials for the hiring of all new affiliate physicians and assists with the training, privileging, and supervision of affiliate physicians
- Completes the Medical Director’s statement on occurrence reports, reviews complications, and provides feedback as appropriate
- Participates in the development of a list of consultants who are willing to care for clients referred from health centers
- Acts as liaison between the affiliate and medical communities in which the affiliate has health centers
- Participates in regional and national Planned Parenthood meetings as appropriate
- Supports and participates in training programs for staff, including ongoing clinician in-service training
- Assumes legal responsibility for ordering and distribution of drugs and devices in compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws
- Advises the President/CEO and Board of Directors regarding clinical matters
- Confers with the news media and the community concerning medical issues relative to the affiliate, in conjunction with the President/CEO
- Provides medical consultation to clinicians regarding the clinical management of specific clients
- Serves as Principal Investigator on any clinical research studies the affiliate undertakes and assumes primary responsibility for supervision of all medical aspects of the studies, including the provision of emergency care
- Examines the feasibility of expanding the scope of gynecological and non-reproductive services in the affiliate health centers and assists with the initiation and implementation of those services as appropriate
- Ensures that interactions incorporate the affiliate values of integrity, diversity, partnership, customer focus, and quality
- Attends monthly Management Team meetings, Board of Directors meetings as requested, and other meetings on behalf of the President/CEO
- Conducts staff meetings with Medical Management Team and provides support to clinician meetings
- Assumes other duties as assigned by President/CEO or as needed
Qualifications:
- Has a strong commitment to the mission, policies, goals, and philosophy of Planned Parenthood
- Is licensed to practice medicine in Florida (with current DEA license)
- Trained in OB/GYN specialty area (other specialties will be considered with demonstrated experience in the full range of women’s heath care, including contraception services, colposcopy, LEEP, and first and second trimester abortions)
- Has or plans to develop a local hospital affiliation (admitting privileges required)
- Supports the autonomous delivery of services by mid-level clinicians
- Supports and advocates for expansion of services provided by mid-level clinicians
- Committed to professional development and staying abreast of current medical literature, evolving medical standards, and relevant advances in the field
- Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork, understands the interaction between the role of the Medical Director and other staff
- Supports a customer-focused approach to health care delivery
- Functions comfortably in a protocol-based practice
- Thrives as part of an interdependent team
- Flexible in terms of scheduling and willing to travel to health center sites on a regular basis
- Prioritizes affiliate needs as primary and balances outside commitments accordingly
