Description of Organization: RH Reality Check (www.rhrealitycheck.org) is an award-winning daily publication providing evidence-based news, analysis, and commentary, as well as interactive dialogue on matters of sexual and reproductive health and justice. RHRC is expanding its capacity in 2013 through a number of strategic hires, including the position listed here. We are an independent 501 (c) (3) organization. Position Responsibilities: RHRC is hiring a Managing Editor (ME) to join our rapidly growing team. The ME will help sustain
and build a rapidly expanding daily publication dedicated to excellence in fact-based news, analysis,
commentary, and investigative reporting on sexual and reproductive health and justice issues. The
ideal candidate is a creative and strategic thinker who is able to multi-task and work with a small
team to get things done, often on a tight timeline; a self starter not afraid to take initiative when
appropriate; a manager able to engage constructively with other staff; and an individual who is not
afraid to think outside the box. Posted November 2012 for start in January 2013.
The Managing Editor will be responsible for:
- Managing and editing daily news, analysis, and commentary;
- Assigning and managing stories on deadline;
- Assisting in scheduling and placement of stories;
- Editing stories for clarity, crispness, and quality; assuring adherence to style; and factchecking;
- Identifying stories that must be covered and connecting with the right people to do so;
- Working daily with contract writers and community contributors and ensuring smooth
communications with all parties;
- Managing issue-focused series;
- Working with the Business Manager to oversee contracts and payments to reporters and
writers;
- Assisting with outreach to media and policy makers on our stories, and assisting with media
releases;
- Managing and coordinating editorial meetings and writer calls;
- Working with the team to publish compelling video clips and photos;
- Other duties and projects as assigned and as the site expands;
- Working in collaboration with other staff to raise funds to support a broader investigative
research effort.
Qualifications:
- Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to adhere to and refine style;
- Superb judgment on both editing and content;
- Knowledge of and commitment to reproductive and sexual health and justice issues;
- At least three years of experience writing and editing;
- Excellent news judgment;
- An understanding, familiarity, and ease of use of online spaces and publications; and
- Working knowledge of blog platforms, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media tools.

Is able to simultaneously multi-task (a critical aspect of this position) and deliver great work with
ease and grace; is comfortable often working behind the scenes.
