LASI Project Director

Date Posted: 8/24/2010
Organization: Abortion Access Project
Location: Cambridge, MA

Application Deadline: 11/2/2010

Description of Organization:
The Abortion Access Project is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts that works to ensure access to safe abortion for all women in the U.S.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide collaborative leadership and oversight to a team of project consultants. Work closely with AAP leadership and lead consultants/LASI State Project Directors to shape and achieve immediate and long-term project-wide and state-level project goals.
  • Oversee and support state-based implementation of select interventions designed to demonstrably increase access to safe abortion within the context of a broader reproductive health and justice agenda. Organize financial and technical support, materials development, and training as needed.
  • Strategize and support the integration, institutionalization and maintenance of state-level initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with project team members and other AAP leadership and staff to plan for continued work in least access states; bring leadership and vision to the process.
  • Perform project, contract and budget management.
  • Promote the project to allied organizations nationally and at the state-level; build partnerships and collaborations that support the achievement of project goals.
  • Serve as a member of the AAP Management Team.

This is a high visibility position that is national in scope, and offers a compelling opportunity to confront the unsolved problem of abortion access in some of the most politically challenging and resource constrained states in the U.S.

Qualifications:

AAP currently seeks a skilled and collaborative leader to direct the Least Access States Initiative (LASI), AAP’s field-based effort to increase the accessibility of safe abortion care in selected “least access” states in the U.S.

LASI is an innovative project to engage and provide expert assistance to local stakeholders to identify, test and disseminate effective solutions to poor and diminishing access to safe abortion. The LASI Project Director will use proven, opportunity-oriented leadership, facilitation, consensus-building, and management skills to provide project oversight, expertise, strategic guidance and support. A demonstrated ability to lead diverse projects in different cultural and political contexts is essential with an applied understanding of Southern U.S. context a plus.

The Project Director leads a team of project consultants and oversees all aspects of project implementation including connecting the project to the broader work of AAP and to the reproductive health and rights movement. As a member of AAP’s management team, the Project Director also helps to shape AAP’s evolving strategies and ongoing development to ensure that all U.S. women have access to safe abortion.

This is a full-time staff position and reports to the Executive Director. Telecommuting will be considered for non-Boston area residents.
