Description of Organization: NARAL Pro-Choice New York is the leading pro-choice political and advocacy organization in New York State. The National Institute for Reproductive Health is our education and program arm working with state and local leaders to design new approaches for removing barriers and improving reproductive health care for all women
Position Responsibilities: The ideal candidate is self-motivated and has a strong commitment to the goals of the organization; has experience developing advocacy campaigns and in government relations; and is interested in politics and government affairs with an eagerness to learn more. This person will support the organization’s legislative, political and advocacy work. This position reports to the Vice President, Political and Legislative Affairs.
- Develop and implement campaigns that support the organization’s legislative, electoral and advocacy initiatives, in collaboration with VP of Political and Legislative Affairs and organizing staff. Work with organizing staff and communications team to design and implement campaign tactics.
- Support legislative and policy initiatives at both the state and local level in New York State. Maintain legislative scorecards and databases, track legislation, prepare for and track lobbying programs, attend lobby meetings, manage outreach to legislative offices.
- Coordinate endorsement process for each election, including candidate research and candidate questionnaire process.
- Develop materials for elected officials and candidates on reproductive health and rights issues.
- Work with organizing staff to design and implement statewide campaign to build and cultivate supporter base.
- Represent organization in coalitions working on reproductive health and allied issues.
- Take a leadership role as necessary.
- Additional duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A deep commitment to and knowledge of reproductive health and rights. 3-5 years of relevant work experience (such as public affairs, political/campaigns).
- Knowledge of the legislative and political process is essential.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, the ability to convey complex information in a clear, culturally competent and understandable manner.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including exceptional attention to detail, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and operate calmly under pressure.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
- A bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus.
- Experience supervising the work of others a plus.
- Some in-state travel required. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point and other PC programs required.
