Development Officer for Individual Giving

Salary: $45,000 to $60,000, depending on experience.

Description of Organization:

The National Network of Abortion Funds (the Network) is dedicated to increasing access to abortion for low-income women and girls across the U.S. Founded in 1993 by 24 grassroots abortion Funds, the Network now includes 100 funds in 40 states, the District of Columbia, and internationally. The Network works to build the capacity of our member Funds to provide direct assistance to women seeking abortions and also conducts national and state-based advocacy to ensure that those most in need – low-income women, women of color, and young women – have access to abortion and full reproductive health care.

The Network is a social justice organization and is committed to diversity in both its programmatic work and staffing with regard to race, culture, ethnicity, class, religion, physical ability, age, gender, and sexual orientation.

The Development Officer for Individual Giving is responsible for the management and coordination of the Network’s individual donor fundraising efforts. The Development Officer for Individual Giving will also provide support to member abortion Funds through fundraising training, assistance, and collaborative fundraising activities.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position located in our downtown Boston office. The Development Officer for Individual Giving reports to the Deputy Director.



Position Responsibilities:

Fundraising Planning: Responsible for development of annual individual donor fundraising plan including goal setting, communication, solicitation, and acknowledgment activities. Manage fundraising calendar. Work with Deputy Director and board fundraising committee to develop plan. 

Management of fundraising information and supervision of fundraising staff: Responsible for detailed, accurate recordkeeping of donations and donor contact in donor database and other informational records. Responsible for producing reports, segmenting donors for mailings and other solicitation activities, and managing contact preferences, etc. Supervise Program Associate on management of donor database, donation processing, donation acknowledgments, and assembly of direct mail pieces.

Communications: Responsible for writing and producing reports to donors as needed. Work with Communications Director to plan, write, and design content for newsletter whose main audience is individual donors. Develop website email/social media program in conjunction with Deputy Director, Communications Director, and Social Media Coordinator to keep donors informed of work and share opportunities to engage in Network programming.

Management of Donor Fundraising Activities: Responsible for building a strong fundraising team, working with the board and other supporters to implement fundraising strategies in the following areas:

Major Donors: Take primary responsibility for managing and expanding the major donor program. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and develop stewardship plans for top donors. Increase in-person visits and other personalized contact with major donors. Work with Executive Director, Deputy Director, Board of Directors, and volunteers to support and participate in major donor program.

Individual Donors, Direct Mail, Prospect Identification and Research: Take primary responsibility for individual donor solicitation, cultivation of current donors, development and implementation of direct mail campaigns, and follow-up calling to current donors. Work to identify prospects and research opportunities for direct mail solicitation to new lists. Tailor communications to specific audiences of donors as program/lists grow.

House Parties: Identify opportunities for and organize house parties in conjunction with board members and member Funds. Some events serve as collaborative fundraising opportunities benefiting both the Network and member Funds. 

National Bowl-a-Thon:Play a supporting role incoordination of national collaborative fundraising effort with participating member Funds. Work with Social Media Coordinator to bring media attention to effort.

Online Fundraising:  Develop online fundraising strategies, identify opportunities for fundraising via social media/social networking, work with Communications Director and Social Media Coordinator to raise organizational profile online.

Program Planning: Participate with other staff and board members in collaborative planning of Network programs and strategic planning.

Member Fund Support: Provide assistance to member Funds needing fundraising help as part of the Network’s overall capacity-building support to member Funds. Develop and lead fundraising trainings via webinar and at Network Organizing Summits. Provide fundraising related content on the members-only website.



Qualifications:
  • Commitment to abortion access and full reproductive health care for all women; commitment to women’s rights, social, economic, and racial justice.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Must be able to produce effective and compelling written materials.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in donor fundraising and donor relations.
  • Experience with major gifts fundraising
  • Experience with online fundraising including email solicitation and social media strategies, preferred.
  • Experience developing and nurturing positive relationships with donors and supporters.
  • Experience building and managing a fundraising team of staff, board, and volunteers.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work with diverse staff, board, and member funds with sense of humor and flexibility.
  • Ability to work well in teams.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and creative.
  • Language skills other than English are a plus.
