Description of Organization: The National Abortion Federation is the professional association of abortion providers in North America. NAF is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and patients.
NAF members include clinics, hospitals, and physician’s offices who together care for more than half the women who choose abortion in the U.S. and Canada each year. Our members also include public hospitals and both public and private clinics in Mexico City.
Position Responsibilities: The Development Director reports to NAF’s President and CEO. The Director works closely with the Vice Presidents and other senior staff and interacts regularly with program staff to document NAF’s funding needs and accomplishments. This position also regularly communicates with foundation program officers.
The primary responsibilities of the Director are to manage all aspects of NAF’s grants program, including renewing current grants and securing new grants; and preparing program reports for funders reflecting solid accomplishments.
Develops and adheres to a calendar of foundation due dates and other key development activities;
- Drafts grant proposals and reports, in keeping with the various funding interests and formats required by foundations;
- Identifies potential new foundation funders and submits letters of inquiry;
- Works with the finance staff to support development of budgets and reports required by funders;
- Responds to requests for information from foundation program officers;
- Identifies and disseminates NAF materials and/or updates that would be of interest to program officers and/or foundations;
- Arranges personal visits for President and CEO with foundation officers;
- Maintains files that document program activities and accomplishments, and consults with program staff to ensure that these files are up-to-date;
- Maintains foundation mailing and email lists;
- Maintains media excerpt files in order to provide sample press and media coverage to funders; and
- Prepares Development reports for NAF Board of Directors.
The Development Director also provides leadership in individual gifts program:
- Implements a basic planned giving program;
- Manages NAF’s participation in the Combined Federal Campaign;
- Prepares mail and online appeals for individual donations;
- Arranges for thank-you letters or emails to be sent to donors; and
- Supervises maintenance of donor data base.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 years of related professional experience;
- Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and prioritize diverse and detailed tasks;
- Excellent written communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with donors and staff;
- Commitment to reproductive choice; and
- Resourcefulness and flexibility.
