Description of Organization: Founded in 2001, the Religious Institute is a multifaith organization dedicated to advocating for sexual health, education, and justice in faith communities and society. The Religious Institute has emerged as the national leadership organization working at the intersection of sexuality and religion. Our staff provide clergy, congregations, and denominational bodies with technical assistance on addressing sexuality and reproductive health, and assist sexual and reproductive health (SRH) organizations on addressing religious issues and developing outreach to faith communities. Our partners include the major SRH and LGBT advocacy organizations, as well as the leading mainstream and progressive religious institutions in the United States.
Position Responsibilities: The Religious Institute’s Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director on all aspects of the management, development activities and programs of the Religious Institute and will be directly responsible for the supervision of staff and office operations. The Deputy Director will direct special initiatives of the Religious Institute, author or co-author publications, represent the Religious Institute at conferences and meetings, and serve as Acting Executive Director during the Executive Director’s vacations and sabbatical. The position is full time in the Westport, CT offices of the Religious Institute.
Essential Job Duties:
- Provide direct supervision of staff and office management, including implementation of personnel policies, coordination of staff meetings and functions, smooth running of office systems and finances, recommended hiring of staff and interns, and annual performance evaluations.
- Serve as key partner with Executive Director and other staff in development of annual program plan, timeline, budget, and long term strategic plan.
- Serve as key partner with Executive Director in obtaining funding for the Religious Institute. Identify foundation and donor prospects, prepare foundation proposals and required foundation reporting.
- Direct the next phase of the Religious Institute seminary project and online courses, and supervise other Religious Institute projects.
- Create and manage new Religious Institute initiatives.
- Author or co-author Religious Institute publications and materials.
- Represent the Religious Institute at conferences, meetings, training workshops, coalitions, including keynote speeches, training workshops, sermons, and classroom presentations.
- Act as Acting Executive Director when Executive Director is not present or available.
Qualifications:
- M.Div. or Ph.D. from accredited seminary or M.P.H./Ph.D. in human sexuality with significant FBO experience
- Ordained clergy or Ph.D. theologian highly preferred; graduate level training in human sexuality highly desirable.
- 7+ years management experience, including staff supervision and management in FBO or other not-for-profit organization
- Graduate level teaching experience and authorship of publications highly desirable
- Outstanding writing and verbal skills, demonstrated track record in public speaking, fund raising, preaching, teaching, and publications
- Demonstrated passion and commitment to sexual justice issues
- Long term commitment to goals and vision of the Religious Institute
