Free Press is a national, nonpartisan organization that believes that media must truly inform and engage people for our democracy to flourish. Through education, organizing and advocacy we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, and universal access to communications. Founded in 2002, Free Press is the largest media reform organization in the United States, with half a million activists and nearly 40 employees working in offices in Washington, D.C. and Florence, Mass. Free Press comprises two separate nonprofit organizations, Free Press and the Free Press Action Fund. Both entities share the same overall mission, office space, and employees. This job posting refers collectively to the two organizations under the name "Free Press".



Position Responsibilities:
  • Help craft short- and long-term data goals, and work to ensure sustained attention and proper prioritization to data management and maintenance projects.
  • Serve as the leader and driver of efforts to migrate from outmoded database systems to new constituent-relationship management systems.
  • Acquire and maintain working knowledge of the range of data management technologies in use at Free Press and maintain knowledge of trends in data software tools and management practices.
  • Assist staff in maintaining, administrating, planning and implementing use of the organization’s contact and fundraising databases.
  • Serve as the primary go-to resource to support staff and to increase staff’s capacity for self-directed use of data.
  • Use Exceed, Salesforce.com, and ActionKit to assist with the maintenance and tracking of Free Press’ constituents, donors and allies.
  • Establish and adhere to routine data management schedule, including imports and exports between databases. Clean and analyze spreadsheets in preparation for imports.
  • Generate reports and data visualizations as needed and requested by advocacy and organizing, policy, and fundraising staff.
  • Assist advocacy and organizing team in developing systems for tracking contacts with allies, constituents, and activists.
  • Assist development team in improving and developing systems for tracking and analyzing donor data.
  • Provide data analysis using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Coordinate inter-team data sharing, and recommend and enforce best practices for data integrity.
  • Coordinate the integration of new data sources from online sources such as ActionKit, OpenCongress.org, and the Free Press Drupal websites.


Qualifications:
  • One to three years related work and/or volunteer experience in data administration. Experience in a nonprofit public interest-oriented setting is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience with qualitative and quantitative data management.
  • Must have the ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data and produce reports.
  • Experience with Excel and database software required, with a demonstrated ability to manage complex datasets.
  • General knowledge of Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) software, with direct experience using Salesforce.com.
  • Familiarity with SQL, Microsoft Office Suite, Exceed, and Salesforce.com preferred; capacity for more advanced technical skills is a plus.
  • Must have a commitment to accuracy and the ability to manage and track important details.
  • Must have a strong personal work ethic and the ability to organize time, manage a varied range of activities, and meet critical deadlines. Must keep self and work files organized.
  • Must consistently demonstrate common sense, flexibility and teamwork. Must be able to adapt or modify plans, timelines, or processes in response to changing circumstances.
  • Must be able to follow best-practice standards for online communication and help other staff do the same.
  • Must be able to formulate and clearly communicate ideas to others. Must be able to leverage constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the organization.
  • Must be able to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization including: staff, consultants, colleagues, volunteers, members/constituents, and the general public.
  • Must be confident, outgoing, courteous, and professional in all written and verbal communications.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to be entrusted with sensitive information and conduct daily activities with the utmost professionalism and integrity.
