Description of Organization: The Black Women's Health Imperative (Imperative) is the only organization devoted solely to advancing the health and wellness of America's 19.5 million Black women and girls through advocacy, community health and wellness education and leadership development. Founded as the National Black Women's Health Project in 1983 by health activist and McArthur genius Byllye Y. Avery, the Imperative promotes optimal health for African American women across their lifespan - physically, mentally and spiritually.
Position Responsibilities: The Black Women’s Health Imperative (Imperative) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to develop and help implement the communications strategies, messages and materials that support the organization’s multi-faceted health program and policy agenda. This position offers the successful candidate opportunities to work with senior staff and the president’s office in implementing a new strategic communications strategy to promote the work of the Imperative.
Responsibilities include:
- Support the president in her role as spokesperson for the organization.
- Work with Program Director in coordinating the communications and marketing efforts of all health projects funded at the state and local level and ensure timely delivery of grant reports.
- Work with Marketing Director in implementing a highly visible, integrated communications strategy to elevate the Imperative brand and ensure timely delivery of products.
- Utilize social networking tools to promote programs, projects, and policy initiatives.
- Ensure brand consistency of all program print and online documents disseminated to the public.
- Assist with making timely and relevant updates to the Web site.
- Write op-eds, speeches, blogs, talking points, briefings and fact sheets, as needed to support organization’s programs and policies.
- Research health-related statistics, facts and information for a forthcoming Imperative publication.
Successful applicants will have a strong interest in women’s health issues, possess an understanding of how to communicate effectively to culturally diverse communities and background, degree and/or experience in: communications, journalism, health communications, or public relations.
This position reports to the program director and the president.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years of experience in communications or health education
- Strong background in women’s health issues with strong research skills
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, writing and editing skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, sociable and sensitive to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated commitment to health disparities issues
- Experience promoting health or women’s campaigns
