Associate Vice President, Discovery Research

Founded in 1946, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org) is a collective of passionate individuals who want to bring about a world free of multiple sclerosis. Through its dynamic nationwide chapter network, the Society funds research, furthers education, and provides services and programs to its 750,000 general members, including 400,000 people who live with multiple sclerosis.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and direction for the Society’s academic discovery research programs both nationally and internationally.
  • Work closely with the Society’s Chief Research Officer, department colleagues, and leadership volunteers to develop strategic directions and implement short and long-range strategic goals.
  • Oversee the Society’s investigator-initiated biomedical discovery research funding programs (research grants, pilot awards, collaborative center awards, and new initiatives as needed). Key activities include engagement with the scientific community to raise awareness, interacting with applicants and institutions, management of scientific peer-review, implementation of funding recommendations, oversight, monitoring and reporting on activities and outcomes of the discovery research programs.
  • Oversee the activities of the Society’s fellowship and faculty award programs.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of funded projects.
  • Develop new initiatives in partnership with department colleagues.
  • Organize and lead scientific workshops in priority areas.
  • Work closely with Fast Forward staff to enable translation of laboratory discoveries to clinical applications.
  • Serve as a spokesperson with the Society chapters, people with MS, key donors and Society leaders and media.
  • Communicate effectively with donors and participate actively in research-oriented fundraising activities (e.g. Society’s ‘No Opportunity Wasted ’campaign).
  • Attend scientific meetings and other appropriate research/policy forums.


Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree (MD, PhD or comparable) in biological sciences with a minimum of 5 years (exclusive of graduate and postdoctoral training) of laboratory or clinical research experience.
  • A strong scientific background in inflammatory and/or neurodegenerative diseases with experience in conducting discovery research programs in an academic setting (a track record of successful grant funding is a plus).
  • A minimum of 3 years of grant and research administration experience with demonstrated ability to manage budgets and personnel.
  • Able to think broadly and strategically about research while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, people management and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience and interest in working on teams.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with a range of audiences including the scientific/medical community, pharmaceutical/biotech partners, lay audiences and the media.
  • Excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and willingness to develop competency with database and grant administration software platforms.
  • A willingness to develop skills in donor communication and fundraising.
  • A leadership style that is proactive, flexible, collegial and allows for new ideas.
  • A high energy level and a willingness to manage a schedule that includes at least 25% travel (National & International).
