Managing HPV: A New Era in Patient Care

The Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP) and Planned Parenthood® Federation of America (PPFA) are working in partnership on a new, comprehensive clinical education program, Managing HPV: A New Era in Patient Care. In tandem with American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP), this curriculum addresses current research and best practice recommendations concerning HPV testing, incorporating the HPV vaccine into prevention care, and treatment for complications of HPV including external genital warts and cervical cancer.

You may request an ARHP speaker to present this medical education lecture at your event, including clinical conference or grand rounds session. Speaker honoraria and travel expenses will be covered by ARHP. To request a lecture, please click here to complete and submit the form. For more information about the program, please contact kquissell@arhp.org.

Background

Despite being the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States, the majority of American men and women are unfamiliar with human papillomavirus (HPV).1 As a result, most people are unaware of the link between HPV and cervical cancer. The importance of educating the public about this connection is a frontline issue for the reproductive health care community. Clinicians recognize the importance of providing clients with the most recent developments in the fight against cervical cancer including the introduction of improved screening tools for HPV and the development of the HPV vaccine. ARHP and PPFA are committed to providing health care practitioners with progressive, medically-accurate information and advanced prevention, screening, and treatment options for HPV and cervical cancer.

Program Design and Planned Activities

The HPV program features several major activities: live education sessions implemented during grand rounds, regional and national meetings, and conferences; technology based sessions available online, such as web casts that allow distance learning to take place; and enduring materials comprised of Clinical Proceedings®, tool kits, reference guides, and brochures that enable clinicians to access information easily, and readily share it with clients. The activities designed for health care providers are accredited for continuing medical education (CME) credit, pharmacology credit, and nursing contact hours.

Selected Program Components

  • Literature review, needs assessment report, and clinical recommendations
  • The complete slide set for this program is available online for free at ARHP’s open-access tool, the Curricula Organizer for Reproductive Health Education (CORE)
  • ARHP’s accredited monograph Clinical Proceedings
  • 15 national and regional visiting faculty sessions including grand rounds
  • 3 web-based webinars
  • Teaching tools distributed to leading reproductive health care professionals
  • Patient education brochures Understanding HPV and Cervical Cancer and Understanding the HPV Vaccine
  • Online interactive Web tool for parents and young people seeking information on HPV prevention

Curriculum Learning Objectives

  • Describe the significance of infection with HPV to patients including prevalence, mode of transmission, and long-term consequences
  • Utilize national guidelines when screening patients for cervical and anal disease
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines when managing women with abnormal screening tests
  • Counsel patients regarding potential benefits and risks of vaccination against HPV

Intended Audience and Accreditation

The intended audience for the medical education activities include health care professionals—physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse midwives, pharmacists, researchers and others in the fields of ob/gyn and family practice. The public education activities will be developed for patients, the media, and the public.

The curriculum/live sessions, webinars, MobileCME, and Clinical Proceedings associated with this program are accredited for continuing medical education, nursing contact hours, pharmacology, and pharmacist credits.

Funding

This project is funded through independent education grants from a collaboration of pharmaceutical companies including: GlaxoSmithKline, Graceway Pharmaceuticals, Merck and Co. Inc., QIAGEN, and Roche Pharmaceuticals.
