 A Clinical Update on
Intrauterine Contraception
ARHP is sponsoring a continuing medical education (CME) program, A Clinical Update on Intrauterine Contraception. The goal of this program is to make intrauterine contraception (IUC) a more utilized contraceptive method in the United States.
You may request an ARHP speaker to present this medical education lecture at your event, including clinical conference or grand rounds session. Background
Intrauterine contraception (IUC) has been the contraceptive method of choice for many women for more than a decade. However, this safe and effective method of contraception is not widely used by women in the United States. Several factors account for the disparity in IUC acceptance between the United States and the rest of the world, including backlash from difficulties with the Dalkon Shield IUD several decades ago, relative discomfort in the U.S. discussing sexuality-related topics, dependence on oral contraceptive pills as the contraceptive method of choice, and failure of U.S. health care providers to counsel women adequately about all appropriate contraceptive options.
Program Design and Educational Activities
ARHP will place A Clinical Update on Intrauterine Contraception CME presentations at a variety of venues throughout 2007 and 2008. Session venues will include national and regional society meetings, family planning clinics, and other public health settings. Select sessions will include a hands-on Copper T IUD and levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG IUS) insertion practicum immediately following the CME presentation.

In September 2004, ARHP released an issue of Clinical
Proceedings®, ARHP's accredited
continuing medical education (CME) monograph series, New
Developments in Intrauterine Contraception. The educational content of this Clinical Proceedings focuses
on educating providers so they may feel more comfortable offering intrauterine
contraception as a useful and effective option for their patients.

Intended
Audience and Accreditation
The intended audiences for this program are physicians,
nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, physician assistants, and other health
care providers in obstetrics/gynecology, and family medicine. The Clinical Update on Intrauterine Contraception program
is accredited by ARHP and the National Association of Nurse
Practitioners in Women's Health.
