As an organization focused on health, ARHP policies, procedures and physical office space in Washington, DC and Oakland, CA promote healthy living, including environmentally conscious policies focused on resource conservation and sustainable business practices.
ARHP Office and the Felicia Stewart Center
Washington, DC office: In 2008, ARHP moved to a new location at 1901 L Street, NW, and collaborated with Envision Design, a firm specializing in architecture, design and planning for sustainable communities, to design and build an environmentally friendly office space. A variety of strategies were used to reduce the environmental impact of ARHP staff members’ work space and the Felicia Stewart Center - East, including:
- Natural light to reduce energy usage and provide views outside
- Office-wide recycling for metals, glass, plastics and paper
- Automatic shut-off sensor lights and Energy Star™ rated appliances
- Non-vinyl, low VOC, renewable, and pre-consumer recycled building materials
- Strategic sizing of workstations to limit cutting of materials and associated waste
- Filtered drinking water and ice cubes
- Repurposing and reuse of previous furniture into new space
Oakland, CA office: ARHP’s office space at 1330 Broadway, including the Felicia Stewart Center - West, includes office-wide recycling for metals, glass, plastics and paper.
Guests visiting the ARHP office and the Felicia Stewart Centers are strongly encouraged to:
- Recycle all metals, glass, plastics, and paper
- Reduce or eliminate use of disposable materials
- Use public transportation systems
- Consult with ARHP staff about available environmentally-friendly food, resources, and materials
“Green” Educational Activities
ARHP demonstrates a commitment to conservation and sustainability through its educational activities, including webinars and the annual Reproductive Health conferences. Live and archived webinars allow learners to participate in education activities twenty-four hours a day from their homes. By reducing travel to in-person presentations, ARHP helps deliver educational content with reduced impact on the environment. At Reproductive Health conferences, ARHP and conference partners’ environmental-friendly procedures include:
- Recycled conference tote bags that can serve as reusable shopping bags
- Minimizing individually-packaged food and beverages
- Electronic syllabi and other electronic materials in lieu of paper-based materials
- On-site recycling of metals, glass, plastics and paper
