Summary
Misperception about the risks associated with combined hormonal contraceptives may needlessly limit a woman’s contraceptive choices. Perception and interpretation of risk are influenced by a number of factors, including the presentation of the risk and its characteristics.
When communicating with patients about the risks associated with combined hormonal contraceptives, providers should bear in mind the relevant factors that affect risk perception and interpretation, consider expert guidance, and make use of available tools, tailoring discussions about risk to each woman’s needs and wants.
