Gary Stewart Scholarship for Research in Public Health Recipient

Margot Brown, BA
UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Medical Program
Nominator: Colette Auerswald, MD, MS

Margot Brown is a third-year student in the UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Medical Program, a combined M.S and M.D. degree program. For the past nine years, she has worked extensively on both the clinical and public health level to address the direct medical needs of underserved populations, support adolescents in their family planning decisions, and advocate for women’s reproductive freedom.

Ms. Brown is currently conducting qualitative research to identify the counseling needs of nulliparous adolescent IUC users from a predominately minority population. The results of this study may be used to inform clinical counseling regarding use of this contraceptive method.

Ms. Brown is particularly drawn to adolescent medicine because of the unique developmental changes that occur during this period of life and the impact that these changes can have on sexual-decision making. As a future adolescent medicine physician, she plans on combining clinical medicine with public health activism to support young women in their reproductive choices.
